Christy Shaterian-Dux - Making an Impact Through Photography

It’s #WCW. Yes, that’s Woman Crush Wednesday!

Today’s I See You® blog features the energetic Christy Shaterian-Dux, owner of Christy Shaterian Photography.  This California girl found her way to Nashville in 2014 and hit the ground running with her photography business.

Christy specializes in portraits, conceptual composites and boudoir photoshoots. Her ability to capture the spirit of the person, experience or movement she is photographing is a level of expertise that is truly astounding.

What sets Christy apart from the rest is this deep connection and desire to give back and make a lasting impact through the lens of photography. Christy is a committee member of the Nashville Creative Souls Tribe a community group for women.

We met Christy when she volunteered her services to photograph Ashley’s mini-wedding, given to her after she and her husband cancelled their October wedding after her breast cancer diagnosis.

Just one week before her bilateral mastectomy Christy swooped in and captured an experience and memory for Ashley and her husband that was more than they could have done for themselves.

Not only did Christy offer her services, but also chose to create a boudoir photoshoot for Ashley to capture the beauty in her journey, while celebrating a body that was about change.

We knew when given the opportunity, we needed to introduce her to the I See You family because she optimizes I See You values.

This amazing boss babe recently captured Nashville’s hearts and the attention that got her featured in the Southern Living Magazine after she and her husband creatively announced her pregnancy at a Waffle House.

We are so honored Christy was willing to let us celebrate her and share a little more in her own words.

What or who inspired you to create your business? Tell us about your business?

My husband. I was in a major transition in my life...personally, professionally, pretty much all aspects of my life. He was the one who made the comment that I should consider doing photography full-time. I didn't even think that could be an option for me...but since then, I haven't stopped.

Who saw you and supported your dreams?

I am so fortunate to have a wonderful support system. Not only is my husband one of my #1 supporters, but my friends and family have been there for me from day one. Not just as supporters, but as sounding boards, as people who can help guide or direct me, and people who will tell me if something needs to be different. I love that they're not just "yes" people but will help me make the best decisions.

What song heals your soul?

Oh my gosh, there are soooo many. I lean heavy on music, so the songs kind of come and go depending on what's going on in my life. I think I'll say the first song that really defined how I wanted to live my life both personally and professionally was (and is) TobyMac's "Lose My Soul" - it really spoke to me about how I wanted to live my life. I even have the scripture it is based on present on my business card (Mark 8:36)

What does it mean to YOU to feel seen?

This is a big one for me. I tend to get very self-conscious when it comes to this, but yet equally value and need it. Being seen means that someone has taken notice of who I am or what I've done and appreciates it.

What’s your go-to, self-care tip?

I don't do a lot of self-care, like I should, trying to change that this year. I can say that the self-care that has helped me out the past few years has been getting back into dance and also trying aerial yoga.

I gave myself permission to not know how to do something and haven't looked back in over 2 1/2 years. Right now, those two things are huge in my life and bring me so much joy.

Growing up, did you play an instrument and/or did you participate in any organized sports or clubs?  How do you think these activities helped shape you as a person?

I played the alto sax in 5th and 6th grade, but I have been involved in dance and competitive cheerleading since I was 5 years old. This certainly shaped me as a person because it taught me accountability as well as being a part of a team and the importance of that.

It also helped me in my adult career as I went into sports operations when I got out of high school (I had started dancing for a football team and fell in love with game day operations).

What advice would you give your younger self?

That I don't need the approval of others. I still struggle with this one...also that not everyone is going to like you or what you do and that's ok. Any other people pleasers out there? LOL

What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone thinking about starting their own company?

Do it! Jump in! Don't worry about what other people think or say and don't wait until it is perfect! Get it out there and build from there.
